Anders Behring Breivik (Norway Terrorist) was not the first

I have been hearing about how many people are afraid that the ideas and actions of Anders Behring Breivik (Norway Terrorist) may work their way into the USA. I direct your attention, on July 27, 2008 in Knoxville Tennessee, to a children’s production of “Annie Jr.”, at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church. Jim David Adkisson initiated a shooting spree inside a liberal church. In his own words, in what was intended to be a suicide note, he claimed his actions to be a hate crime driven by his belief that liberals were evil, “Marxist, Socialist Communists”. He compared them to vermin to be eradicated. We do not have to worry about when or if these terrorist ideas and actions reach the USA. They are already here.

Unfortunately, Adkisson was not the first. While Adkisson’s agenda was politically conservative, Eric Robert Rudolph’s agenda took a religiously conservative path. While more well known for the Centennial Olympic Park Bombing, he was targeting abortion clinics (Sandy Springs ~ Atlanta, GA and Birmingham, AL) and a lesbian bar in the late 1990’s.

While these, and the Twin Towers tragedy, may be the pinnacles of atrocity from conservative hate in our country, don’t forget this kind of thinking exists everywhere, from the “Fundamentalist” Sunday Sermons I grew up hearing to the the Army of God mailing anthrax threats, kidnapping, and attempting murder.

While we should not forget to worry about terrorists abroad, we cannot overlook our own, home-grown fanatics.  We discount the danger of hate speech, but these speeches fuel the actions of the Adkissons and Rudolphs out there. And if you think that prevalent hate speech and all it indicates is scary, you should be VERY frightened by the fact that these prejudiced, hate-filled people have infiltrated one of our major political parties!

Our country is in danger. The only thing that will save it is for those who believe in true “freedom for all” to stand up to those who seek to define freedom as belonging only to those who share their views.
